Left Tyler, Texas as soon as the sun came up this morning.  Had a great day on the road.  Started off a bit foggy then heavy haze, then overcast, and finally clear sky.  Even driving through Dallas was a breeze.  So much nicer on the weekend!!  Went past the Texas Motor Speedway again.  Took some photos but the fog was a bit heavy so it is hard to see.  Here is the best one - and that is not saying much!

Did you notice the race cars they have in the middle of the lake?   I didn't think so.  I did a little editing and zoomed in on them best as I could.  Here they are.

Continued on up through Oklahoma and then into Kansas.  Stopped for the rest of the weekend at a truck stop in Garden City, Kansas.  Deliver just down the road from here Monday morning.

Friday, March 30, 2012

Much better day today!!  Started as soon as the sun came up this morning.  Made it all the way through Mississippi to the closed weigh station 5 miles before Louisiana.  Had to stop and wait there because my Louisiana permit had not arrived yet.  Sat there for 4 hours waiting.  While there I took a few more photos.  Notice how low the trailer sits.  It is only 4 inches off the ground.

It finally arrived and I was off again.  Drove to a Pilot truck stop in Tyler, Texas for the night. Bought my Mega Millions ticket too.  Not that I have a snow balls chance....  But have absolutely no chance if I don't play.  Still have no chance.

Thursday, March 29, 2012

Left Marianna this morning and arrived in Pensacola right at 7 am CDT.  Checked in with security.  They said the guy "...was in a meeting but should be calling you in when he gets out".  I went back to the truck and waited.  At 11 am CDT I went back to security and inquired about my status.  All they would say was "They know you are there".  I went back to my truck and waited.  At 2 pm CDT I went back to security and asked again.  This time they said that "...they had issues on first shift" and that "...they would load me on second shift".  Second shift didn't start until 3:30 CDT.  I went back to my truck and waited again.  Needless to say, I'm not a happy camper.  At 3:15 pm CDT security called me and said "come on in".  I was first in line with four other trucks.  Waited until 4 pm CDT and they started to load us.  They finally put the wind generator hub on my trailer.  It weighs 57,300 pounds.  It is the thing that the blades attach to on the huge wind generators that Obama and the democrats think will save the world!!  Got it chained down. Then it was time to tarp it.  Fortunately they used the fork lift to drape them over the top of the thing.  Secured them as best as I could then got on the road.  I didn't get out of there until 6:45 pm CDT!!!!

Well all I had to do was get up on I-10 and that damn tarp started to flap like a huge flag.  I hate those ^&*(&*%^&$^*& things!!  Made it to the weigh station.  The only good thing about today was that the DOT did not give me any hassles.  Permit was fine.  I pulled over to the side and tried to fix the tarp flappage.  Got back on the road again.  Still flappage!!   Drove to the Oasis truck stop just inside Alabama for the night.  Oh the troubles didn't stop there!  Pulled up to get fuel and my locking fuel caps had some rust in the locks and I couldn't get the key in.  Worked on them for about 15 minutes and got them freed up.  Filled up both tanks.  Then went to scale up.  The scale is in a crummy place here so I had to drive around the parking lot, go back out on the road and come in again.  Scaled up then pulled over to the side, parked and went in to get my paperwork.  Well, the girl behind the counter was having a good ole time talking to some guy in front of me.  By the time she got around to doing her job I was really fuming!!  She gave me my fuel ticket but could not find the scale ticket.  She fumbled around for another five minutes. I went and sat down at at table.  Finally I could not take it any more.  I said I'll go get on the scale again.  I went back out, got in my truck, drove around the parking lot and got up on the scale again.  By this time I'm ready to kill someone.  After she got my weight again I went and parked the truck.  I needed to calm down a little bit before I went back inside.  I worked on the tarp again.  Hopefully I have it this time.  Went back in, got my scale ticket - I'm  96,300 pounds.  Took a long hot shower then had dinner.   Hope tomorrow is better!!  Good night!!

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

Had a most enjoyable time off.  Now back at it again.  My next load is tomorrow morning in Pensacola, FL.  I have a different trailer for this.  It has three axles instead of two.  That is a very good thing!!  I can take larger and  heavier (better paying) loads.  It is a lot older and not as pretty as the other one, but that is just fine with me.

Drove to the TA truck stop in Marianna, FL for the night.

And here is what it looks like after I finished securing it to the trailer.

It is going to Riviera Beach, Florida.  Got on the road and drove to the Wilco truck stop in Great Falls, SC.  Wanted to get a bit further but I got to Charlotte at rush hour. Took an hour to go about 15 miles.

Flying J truck stops are definitely not as good as they used to be before Pilot bought them out.

Saturday, March 17, 2012

It rained last night.  Actually, a pretty good thunderstorm that brought out the dreaded "trailer gremlins" again.  During my pre trip this morning found that half my trailer lights were not working and the ABS light was on.  Went across the parking lot to the shop and had them fix it.  Took several hours to find the electrical problem but finally found it!!  Everything works again.  Drove the rest of the way down to the Flying J truck stop in Latta, South Carolina.  Deliver just down the road from here Monday morning.

Another beautiful day on the road.  Left Greensburg just before sun up.  Just in Tennessee from Kentucky on I-75 the interstate was closed to oversize loads.  Normal traffic was allowed through in one very skinny lane for each direction.

The following is a reprint from The Tennessean newspaper online:

Motorists with weekend plans in East Tennessee may need to find another route if they intend to use Interstate 75.
The interstate is closed at Jellico, exit 160, near the Tennessee/Kentucky border.
Tennessee Department of Transportation crews are working to repair a collapsed embankment near the southbound lanes.

According to TDOT, the earth has continued shifting under the interstate since the collapse was discovered on Thursday. Detours have been set up to protect the public until repairs can be made.

Motorists are asked to take the exit, turn left, follow Highway 25W to LaFollette, and then get back to I-75 South in Caryville, exit 134.

Wide load truckers are asked to take the Jellico exit, turn right, follow state route 297 West to state route 63 and then get back on I-75 South at exit 141.

Detour signs and message boards have been placed along the interstate and detour routes to help guide the traffic.

Let me tell you, the detour route for wide loads was really something!  19 miles of interstate was bypassed and it took 45 minutes to travel the detour.  Not because it was that far out of the way, it wasn't.  It pretty much was parallel to the interstate.  The road was a two lane road (in very good condition) that was full of blind turns with no road shoulder.  I drove between 2 and 30 mph most of the way.  For most of the route, there was a minimum of three foot drop off on the edge of the road.  In other places the guard rail was at the edge of the road.  After I made it through the worst of it, I got out the camera and shot some video for you.  As you watch the video remember that I am an oversize load and there is a trailer behind me that does not track the same as the truck. Sorry about the length of it, its about 4 minutes long.

I-75 Detour

The gear grinding in the beginning was me trying to hold the camera with my right hand, shift gears with my left, and steer with my knee.  LOL
That was fun!!!

Continued down to Ashville, NC.  When I got to the I-40 and I-26 split the traffic was stopped on I-26 - where I wanted to go.  Heard on the radio that there was a 10 car pile up on I-26 and the interstate was shut down indefinitely.  There was a 15 mile back up already.  I decided that was not my idea of a good time so I turned around and went back to the TA truck stop in Candler, NC for the night.

Thursday, March 15, 2012

Went in to Milwaukee and delivered the steel this morning.  After that went to the Daily yard just outside Milwaukee in Lannon and picked up a Case 290 Tractor.  It is going to Dillon, SC.

On the way out of Milwaukee went past the "home office" of Harley Davidson.  Also drove past Miller Park, where the Milwaukee Brewers play baseball.

Went back through Chicago but this time without bumper to bumper traffic. Drove down to the Petro truck stop in Greensburg, Indiana for the night.  That is south east of Indianapolis.

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Left North Canton early this morning and drove up to Cleveland and picked up my next load.  It is 9 sheets of steel weighing 33500 pounds going to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Believe it or not, this is an oversize load.  A few of the pieces hung over the side 3 inches.   After I got it all secured I got on the road and drove up to Milwaukee.  Made it through Chicago with some bumper to bumper traffic, but not as bad as it usually is.  The sun was in the right place and made the Chicago skyline beautiful!

Stopped for the night at a small truck stop in Richfield, Wisconsin.  Will deliver in the morning.

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Drove in to the Port of Baltimore in Dundalk, MD this morning and loaded a Caterpillar 316 Excavator.

Finished with only 15 minutes to have to wait until curfew was over at 9 am. Got on the road and drove to Parkersburg, West Virginia and delivered the excavator this afternoon.

My next load is tomorrow morning in Cleveland, Ohio.  Drove to the TA truck stop in North Canton, Ohio and got the last parking spot there!  Went past the Pro Football Hall of Fame again.  They are building a large addition to the building.

Monday, March 12, 2012

Got all my little repair "chores" done this morning. Daily has a car we can use when we are there so I went to Chilli's for lunch.  It was really good to taste real food again!!  My next load is tomorrow morning at the port in Baltimore so I drove down to the TA truck stop in Baltimore for the night.

Saturday, March 10, 2012

Drove down to the "home office" in Carlisle, PA today.  Will spend the rest of the weekend here.  Monday I will have a small chip in my windshield repaired.  Found a problem with the ABS system in the trailer so that will get fixed Monday (hopefully) too.

Friday, March 9, 2012

Left Raphine, VA as soon as I could this morning which, in Virginia, was 1/2 hour after sunrise.  Drove straight through to Middletown, NY and delivered the dozer.  I love driving those things!!  Big boy toys!!  Had snow flurries on and off through Pennsylvania.  After I finished delivering in New York it snowed real hard but it didn't last long.  Then the sun came out. Went to the TA truck stop in Maybrook, NY for the night. Don't have another load lined up yet.

Thursday, March 8, 2012

Left Manning, SC this morning and drove down to North Charleston, SC and loaded a Caterpillar D6 Dozer first thing this morning.  Just as I started to tie it down it started to rain.  It stopped raining when I finished.  Had to put it on the trailer a little bit crooked to minimize the width as much as possible.  Otherwise the blade on the front would have to come off.  The blade is 13 feet wide.  Had to get the width under 12 feet.  By removing a couple pins, angling the blade, and angling the dozer got the width down to 11 feet 6 inches.

I got my soaking wet and muddy self in the truck and down the road after I got it secured.  Had a great day on the road.  Drove to Raphine, VA to the Petro truck stop on I-81 for the night and a good scrubbing!!!!

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

Left Morehead, KY as soon as the sun came up.  Drove to the Charleston, WV area and waited for curfew to end.  At 9 am I was back on the road again.  Drove straight through to Wilson, NC and delivered the tractor this afternoon.  My next load is down in North Charleston, SC.  It is a heavy one!  I'll be overweight as well as over width.  Headed toward Charleston.  Stopped for the night at the TA truck stop in Manning, SC.  A very familiar truck stop.

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

Before I left Walcott, Iowa this morning I stopped and got the truck and trailer washed.  It was really filthy and I could not stand it any more!!  Now its all clean, at least for a few days.  Had a very nice and uneventful day on the road.  Made it past Cincinnati before curfew but didn't make it past Lexington, KY.  Stopped at a truck stop and had dinner.  When curfew was over at 6 I got back on the road and drove for another hour before I ran out of daylight.  Stopped for the night at a Small truck stop in Morehead, KY.
