Left a half-hour before sunrise this morning.  Had to idle the truck all night because my APU quit working.  After I got up on the Interstate about 5 miles down the road the "Low Coolant" light and alarm went off.  I stopped at the next truck stop and bought and added about a half-gallon of coolant.  Left New Mexico and continued on through Arizona with no problems.  In California going through the Majovie Desert, the outside air temperature was 111° F (44° C).  Up ahead I saw a lot of black smoke.

As I got closer I could see that it was probably a car or truck fire.

As I passed it, it looked more like an RV burning.  It was difficult to tell since there was not much left of whatever it was.

That was the extent of my excitement for today.  Stopped at the TA truck stop in Barstow, California for the night.  Got another 556 miles in today.

Left a half-hour before sunrise this morning.  Went past the world famous Cadilac Ranch just west of Amarillo, Texas.

Had about a half-hour delay from a crash in a construction zone that really screwed up traffic.

Then went over the Continental Divide.
Stopped for the night at the Flying J truck stop in Jamestown, New Mexico.  Spent three hours in the shop getting my trailer lights fixed again.

It took forever to get my Mississippi permit this morning. Didn't come in until 11:30.  But when it came in, I left. Because of that, I didn't get anywhere near as far as I would have liked.  Stopped for the night at the TA truck stop in Tallulah, Louisiana.

Tuesday, August 4, 2020

After I got my trailer lights fixed, I left and drove over to Thomasville, Georgia.  Timed it real good.  They were just finishing loading the last of three trucks ahead of me.  When they finished I backed inside the building where they loaded a Cleaver-Brooks Boiler that is going to Pleasanton, California.  That is just east of San Fransisco.  There are two other Daily trucks taking the same thing up there too. I was the first of the three to load.  The second truck arrived as I was pulling out.

Left there and drove to the Oasis truck stop in Robertsdale, Alabama for the night. The air conditioning in the truck stop was broken.  Was not pleasant to eat or take a much-needed shower.  It was damn hot in there!!!  I can sleep in tomorrow.  Don't have a Mississippi permit yet, so I'll wait here until it comes in.

Monday, August 3, 2020

Went over and delivered the wheel loader this morning.  Was back at the Daily yard at 8 am.  Dropped that trailer then moved a few trailers around the yard for the mechanic.  The storm off the coast had virtually little to no effect here.  A couple of brief rain showers but that's all.  Tomorrow I'll head over to Thomasville, Georgia to load a boiler.  Not scheduled to load until 1 pm, so no hurry.

Saturday, August 1, 2020

Left a little after 6 this morning.  Drove back to the Daily yard in Jacksonville.  Be here for the weekend.  Deliver Monday morning.  They say that there is a hurricane coming.  It won't be much of anything.  It is a small one and will be out in the ocean when it goes by us.  We might get a little rain, but that's about all.

Friday, July 31, 2020

Was able to watch the rocket launch from the Kennedy Space Center the other day.  Could see it from Jacksonville.

Today Had another doctor's appointment.  After that drove bobtail up to the Pilot truck stop in Jackson, Georgia.  Met another driver there.  He had a load that he was unable to finish so I was getting his trailer to finish it.  Was a John Deere 544L Wheel Loader that is going to Jacksonville, Florida.

Stayed there for the night.

Tuesday, July 28, 2020

I left the Daily yard at 2:30 this morning.  Drove straight through to Columbus, Mississippi and delivered the stuff.  Got there just before noon.  I was first one to arrive.  Unloaded in less than 15 minutes.  Then drove to the Love's truck stop just down the road a bit.  Was out of hours for the day.  As soon as my 10 hours is up, I'll head back to Jacksonville.  Phone is off.

Monday, July 27, 2020

This morning I went over to the Port of Jacksonville along with two other Daily trucks, to load what I initially thought was a crane.  Turned out to be a material handler.  The biggest part of the load was the machine itself with the first section of boom attached.  That weighed 140,000 pounds and was going on a 12 axle truck.  We got there before the cranes and before the gates were open to the area where we were to load.  The cranes arrived and a few minutes later they opened the gate for all of us to go in.  It takes a while for two cranes to get set up.

While they were doing that we went over and looked at what we were getting ourselves into.

His machine was on a shipping skid parked next to a skid with the stuff we were getting.

Once the cranes were ready they brought the machine over to lift.

They lifted it and the skid was pulled out from under it.

Then the 12 axle truck backed under the machine.

Then set it down.  It fit.

After he got it secured enough to move, he pulled out of the way.  The bigger of the two cranes packed up and left.  Didn't need it for what was left.

Now it was our turn.  After lunch we positioned our trucks one on either side of the remaining crane.  We were each getting one of the tracks and a counterweight.  The track weighs 28,600 pounds and the counterweight weighs 11,354 pounds.

Once I got it all secured, I left.  When I went through the radiation detector that you drive through just before the security booth as you exit, I set off the radiation alarm. Had to wait for Customs and Border Patrol to come over and make sure I wasn't smuggling a bomb.  I explained that I had recently had radiation treatment and everything was fine.

By now the usual Florida afternoon thunderstorm had arrived and I left in a pretty good downpour.  Drove back to the Daily yard in Jacksonville for the night.  I'll get an early start in the morning. Heading to Columbus, Mississippi.

Another Doctor appointment this morning.  After that drove to the Port in Brunswick, Georgia and loaded two John Deere 6155M Tractors that went to Cordele, Georgia. Haven't driven a tractor that small in a long time.

Left there and drove to Cordele and delivered the tractors.  Then drove back to Jacksonville for the weekend.

Yesterday I drive bobtail up to just south of Savannah, Georgia and retrieved a trailer from a driver that quit.  Brought it back to the yard in Jacksonville.

Today I drove to Pensacola and retrieved another one.  Brought it back to the Daily yard in Jacksonville.

Now I'm here for the weekend.

Sunday, July 12, 2020

Left real early this morning.  Short day today.  Can not drive in Alabama on Sunday.  Another stupid, no reason for it, law.  Stopped at the Pilot truck stop in Rising Fawn, Georgia.

Saturday, July 11, 2020

Not much interesting today.  Left this morning at 4:30.  I love being able to start that early.  Drove to the TA truck stop in Greeneville, Tennessee.  That is just northeast of Knoxville.  I'll be able to start early again tomorrow.

Friday, July 10, 2020

My truck was in the truck hospital getting major work done while I was gone.  I was in the people hospital getting major work done.  We both finished at about the same time.

Yesterday I had a doctor's appointment in Jacksonville, Florida at 2  pm.  Right after that I drove back to Carlisle, Pennsylvania.  Only stopped twice on the way, once for dinner and once for gas.  Arrived at the Daily yard in Carlisle at about 2:30 am.  Unloaded a few things from the car, then went to bed.

Got up at 7:30 this morning and finished unloading the stuff from the car.  Then got my trailer and put all my equipment on it.  That took a while!!

Left there at about 10:30 and drove to the Port of Baltimore in Dundalk, Maryland.  Loaded a Caterpillar 325 Excavator that is going to Birmingham, Alabama.

Left there thoroughly exhausted and drove to the TA  truck stop in Baltimore, MD.  Got fuel, scaled, then parked for the night.  Took a LONG cold shower (to cool down), and had Grub Hub bring dinner.  Going to sleep now.  Phone is off.  Good night!!!

Monday, June 22, 2020

This morning I went back to the job site very early to get the trailer ready.  On the way in I took some better pictures of the area that was VERY tight getting in.  Where the culvert is, there is a 3 to 4 foot drop off into the running water.  Can't see it because the weeds were all grown up around it.

And here is where they unloaded me.  I backed up in front of the crane, they lifted the thing off, and I pulled out.

Here they are unwrapping their million dollar "Christmas" present.

After I got empty I left and drove up to the home office in Carlisle, PA.  They have a lot of maintenance work to do on my truck.  When I got there I got my company furnished rental car, did more laundry, had dinner, and settled in for the night.  Tomorrow start off for home.

Saturday, June 20, 2020

Left at sunrise this morning.  When I got to the Maryland state line I met my Maryland pilot escort car.  He fell in behind me as we continued on.  Fortunately had no traffic issues going around Washington DC.  At the Virginia state line my escort car dropped off as I continued on.  In the Fredericksburg area had about 10 miles of bumper to bumper traffic.  Then another few miles of bumper to bumper traffic a little north of Richmond.  After that it was smooth sailing down to Wilson, North Carolina.  At the job site a guy came out and met me on the main road.  He said that one of the trucks had arrived and was in there already.  He said that they had a hard time getting him in.  They had made a construction entrance that was curvy and narrow.  They built it for normal construction traffic, not extra long trailers.  On either side of the gravel temporary road it was very soft mud.

Construction Road
There was one really difficult spot to go through.  It doesn't look very bad in the photo below but trust me, it was.  On a slight curve had to go over a culvert with running water flowing through it.   Directly across it there was a power pole with 2 metal poles around it.  I made it through with 1/4 inch clearance of the load on the left, and less than 6 inches from my right trailer tires going into the culvert.   Quite a "pucker factor" .

Section with the culvert and power pole
I dropped my trailer in there.  The crane is already set up and the other trailer is in there too.  These units have to be unloaded in a specific order.  Thank God, mine is the first!!!

Where I dropped my trailer until Monday

Monday morning should be quick to get out.  After dropping my trailer I left and went o the Kenly 95 truck stop until Monday.
